June Baby by Shannon Garvey cover

June Baby by Shannon Garvey

I really wanted to love this one, but sadly I didn’t. I was first pulled in by the Block Island setting, a New England destination that I love to visit. The author does an amazing job describing the island, the tourist vs local culture, and a lot of the classic New England summer experiences that I love, from the balmy humid air, to walking on sand paths through beach dunes, swimming in the cold, salty water and diving beneath waves, indulging in oysters and cool beers… she painted a beautiful picture. I just didn’t like the main character. I wanted to root for her but kept getting discouraged by the life choices she was making. I think I also was expecting a stronger romance plot to this, especially seeing the endorsement by Elin Hilderbrand on the cover. Regardless, I do think there is an audience for this book. If you’re a fan of Lily King, you might enjoy this literary fiction, but I wouldn’t go into this book thinking it’s a classic summer romance beach read.
